I could spend ten years illustrating the many wonderful scenes created by Tolkien in his books, especially the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. However, there are many other great works of literature by equally creative authors that inspire me. In order to have time and energy to create images based on Greek mythology, English folklore or Aztec religion, I have limited myself to illustrating only a few of the many rich scenes and characters that Tolkien has created.
In this drawing the members of the Fellowship are about to embark on their very dangerous journey. They are silently listening to Elrond’s last words of advice. Each member is alone with his thoughts and fears and hopes. Each knows he is leaving the warmth, safety and light of Rivendale for the cold, danger and darkness caused by the evil, corrupting, Dark Lord. Each is looking into his soul. Looking for the weaknesses that could succumb to the trials ahead. To leave Rivendale is the first test of courage for each of them. |
